About Us

Phil Edwards, a manufacturing and process improvement expert, owns and manages Weald Business Solutions. He is assisted by his wife, Sue, who also runs her own business as a virtual assistant. The business exists to help organisations improve their efficiency, reduce waste, increase production quality, and drive down costs.

With over 25 years experience in engineering and manufacturing organisations we are passionate about simplifying processes, removing waste and the causes of delay and error, and enabling businesses to do what they are best at as efficiently as possible.

We are acutely aware of the frustration felt when things go wrong and someone asks "how did that happen?" We prefer to look at the way a business operates and ask "what could go wrong?" before it does.

For a number of years Phil was a judge at the South-East final of “Young Engineer for Britain” and in 1997 the Engineering Council presented him with an award for “A major contribution to development of Young Engineers”

Phil is a member of the Institute of Operations Management, the Institute of Engineering and Technology, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Background

Phil has worked in engineering and manufacturing for 30 years, starting as an apprentice at The APV Company in Crawley. Following this he has held positions in design, development, production, engineering, and manufacturing in the Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) materials analysis businesses, and as Chief Mechanical Engineer in access control. Both sectors were characterised by their low volumes, bespoke or customised designs, and technically demanding design challenges.

In his final role before starting Weald Business Solutions Phil was Operations Director at Thermo Electron in East Grinstead with responsibility for planning, purchasing, engineering, assembly, test, service and installation. Thermo Electron had some of the finest operations and manufacturing experts with backgrounds in companies such as GEC and Allied Signal. By tapping into this knowledge Phil had access to the best training and industry expertise to learn how to deliver measurable performance improvement.
